Silk Scarves for Women & Men

If you plan to wear the scarf more than three or four times, yes. Polyester satin can mimic the look of silk for a season but the print degrades in the wash, the fabric pills against jacket collars, and it cannot regulate temperature on bare skin — it traps heat in summer and feels cold in winter. Mulberry silk's natural protein structure breathes, drapes, holds dye without fading, and ages gracefully. Our 22-momme scarves are weighted closer to a designer house scarf than a fast-fashion alternative.

If you're buying one scarf to do everything, choose a 35 x 35 inch (90 x 90 cm) square — that's the classic French house size for a reason. It's big enough to tie as a triangle around the shoulders, wrap as a headscarf, fold into a thin neck band, or knot through a handbag handle, but small enough to fit in a clutch. Skinny twillies (around 5 x 35 in) are for hair ties and bag accents; large 53 x 53 in shawls are for evenings and travel.

Three quick tests at home: (1) the burn test — a single fiber from the edge will smell like singed hair and turn to a brittle dark ash; polyester smells like plastic and melts into a hard bead. (2) The hand test — real silk warms up in your palm in seconds and never feels artificially cool. (3) The ring test — a real silk scarf passes smoothly through a wedding ring. For light wear — never. Spot-clean with cool water on a clean white cloth and air it out. For full washes, hand-wash in cool water (under 30°C / 86°F) with a pH-neutral silk wash, lay flat between two towels to press out moisture, and iron on the silk setting from the reverse side while still slightly damp.
