Frequently Asked Questions
Momme is the standard unit for measuring silk fabric density. It indicates the weight of a 100-yard length of silk, 45 inches wide, measured in pounds. Higher momme means thicker, more durable, and more luxurious silk.
22 momme is the gold standard for pillowcases — durable, opaque, and breathable year-round. 19 momme is a solid budget option. Avoid anything below 16 momme for pillowcases, as it will wear out quickly with nightly use.
6A is the highest quality grade for mulberry silk. It's based on fiber length, uniformity, natural luster, and purity. All Muriersilk products use 6A grade silk — the same quality used by the world's top silk brands.
Not always — it depends on the product. Light scarves work best at 12–16 momme for drape and flow. Pillowcases and bonnets are ideal at 19–22 momme. 25 momme is ultra-premium but can feel heavy. Match the weight to the use case.
Thread count measures threads per square inch (used for cotton). Momme measures the weight of silk fabric. A 22-momme silk is roughly equivalent to a 600-thread-count cotton in terms of luxury and durability.
Yes, especially for 3C, 4A, 4B, and 4C hair types. Silk's smooth surface reduces friction that causes breakage, split ends, and frizz. Unlike cotton which absorbs hair's natural moisture, silk helps retain it. 22-momme silk bonnets and pillowcases are the standard for overnight protection of textured hair.
